Effect of soil P status on barley growth, P uptake, and soil microbial properties after incorporation of cover crop shoot and root residues

Background Cover crops (CC) introduced to reduce leaching of nitrate may also improve soil microbial properties and phosphorus (P) uptake in that follow. These effects depend on P status the quality CC residues. Aim Our aim was quantify more persistent incorporation residues three different species barley growth whether any response related changes properties. Methods We examined impact status, species, residue fraction (shoots and/or roots) winter (Hordeum vulgare) Shoot root from contrasting (oats, Avena sativa; corncockle, Agrostemma githago; lupine, Lupinus angustifolius) were incubated for 2 months with low medium status. Dry matter yield offtake characterized while phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), neutral lipid (NLFAs), enzyme activity after harvest. Results Effects shoot appeared or positive not affected by effect negative soil. With lupine biomass, however, increased both soils. Neither treatments nor community composition (bacterial fungal specific PLFAs). Lupine roots phosphomonoesterase, generally stimulated abundance (total PLFAs) compared other treatments. Conclusion conclude following crop microorganisms depends had largest growth.
